| 798 Art Factory Description 798 Art Factory is one of the freshest new spaces in Beijing and every day it draws the city's most creative artists and impassioned art collectors. Whether you love photography or sculpture, painting or video installations, you will find a gallery here devoted to it. The factory halls were built in the 1950s with the Soviet Union's money and East Germany's architectural and industrial know-how. It went on to churn out electronics for decades before being shut down as Beijing urbanized and its industrial sector moved further and further away from the exponentially expanding city center. One moment you are walking along a dark musty hall. Then, turn a corner, and you might find yourself in the middle of an art opening at the White Space Gallery or among the installations at Beijing Tokyo Art Projects. Later, you may wander into the studio of someone like controversial designer Feng Ling, her 4m-long dresses, emblazed with the revolutionary red star, hanging from soaring staircases. In Craft Workshop, workers create sleek lacquer boxes and plates in-store. There's also a gorgeous selection of latticed wood objects like chairs and rocking horses. Jewellery Walkrooms: Their looks won't work on everyone, but for fresh daring designs you can't do better than here. Earrings are so bold and dramatic they are sold individually to be worn alone. One design is made so long it can wrap around your neck and double as a necklace. Feng Ling Fashion Art Design: Trained as an artist, Feng Ling, the controversial designer, has taken Mao suits and qipaos (traditional Chinese dresses) modern by emblazing them with revolutionary symbols and daring colors. She has a studio at Factory 798 and it is well worthy a visit.
